The CDC reports that 20-50% of antibiotics prescribed within acute care hospitals in the US are unnecessary or inappropriate.1 Overuse of antibiotics can lead to unwanted side effects such as Clostridium difficile infections, unnecessary drug-drug interactions, and antibiotic resistance. It is vital the healthcare community improve the use of antibiotics in order to improve patient safety and public health. This course provides an overview of antibiotic stewardship in hospitals with the goal of empowering pharmacists to address the growing concern of inappropriate antibiotic use.
