Transcultural Leadership in Action: Advancing Equity, Health and Human Flourishing

Course overview

A 5-contact hour Leadership Program hosted by the PNA of Central Florida. The program is divided into 5 one-hour presentations as follows: (1) Addressing Social Determinants to Advance Health Equity by Dr. Manny Ramos; (2)Transcultural Leadership in Action by Dr. Christopher Blackwell; (3) Transcultural Competence in Interdisciplinary Teams by Judy Colorado; (4) The Role of Systems Thinking in Advancing Public & Community Health Strategies by Dr. Diane Sanders-Cepeda; and (5) Faith, Family & Folk Practices-Navigating Belief Systems in Patient Care-Alicia Tullo (Moderator). OBJECTIVES: Addressing Social Determinants to Advance Health Equity. (a) Discuss the role nurses can play in addressing social determinants of health and reducing health inequities. (b) Evaluate evidence-based strategies and policy initiatives that address SDOH and promote health equity across healthcare systems and community settings. (c) Demonstrate advocacy by proposing collaborative approaches that engage stakeholders and empower communities to address upstream social determinants of health. OBJECTIVES: Transcultural Leadership in Action. (a) Identify at least three major competencies of nurse leaders. (b) Outline the basic tenets of the Theory of Planned Change and Benners Novice to Expert Theory. (c) Describe the relationship between transformational and transcultural leadership. (d) Implement at least one leadership strategy to advance personal and professional growth. OBJECTIVES: Transcultural Competence in Interdisciplinary Teams. (a) Provide brief overview of the mandate for transcultural competence in care delivery. (b) Define transcultural competence and discuss the continuum expansive model for learning and applicability. (c) Explore challenges and approaches with interdisciplinary teams through individual and group reflections. (d) Engage participants in identifying key learnings, take aways for call to action. OBJECTIVES: The Role of Systems Thinking in Advancing Public & Community Health Strategies. (a) Define systems thinking in the context of public health and explain its relevance to addressing complex policy and population health challenges. (b) Apply systems thinking strategies to navigate real-world health issues. (c) Evaluate how public health interventions ripple outward into sustainable population health strategies. OBJECTIVES: : Faith, Family & Folk Practices-Navigating Belief Systems in Patient Care. (a) Analyze how faith, spiritual beliefs, family dynamics, and traditional healing practices influence patients health behaviors, coping mechanisms, and medical decision-making across diverse cultural contexts. (b) Demonstrate culturally sensitive and respectful communication skills when addressing patients and families faith-based preferences, folk practices, and family roles in healthcare decision-making. (c) Evaluate ethical and professional strategies for balancing patient safety, evidence-based practice, and respect for cultural, spiritual, and familial values in the delivery of nursing care.
