Defibrillation in the Pediatric Patient

Course overview

This course equips healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to perform safe, effective pediatric defibrillation during cardiac arrest. The content addresses the causes and recognition of pediatric arrest; the history, types, and functions of defibrillators; pad placement; shock dosing; and safety practices. It highlights the importance of early defibrillation, teamwork, and communication, with emphasis on TeamSTEPPS principles, rapid response and code team roles, and structured tools such as SBAR, call-outs, and check-backs. The course concludes with strategies for identifying arrest rhythms, applying proper defibrillation techniques, and supporting coordinated resuscitation efforts that improve patient outcomes. The goal of this course is to teach pediatric defibrillation guidelines during cardiac arrest and teamwork strategies.
