Course overview
Every day, nurses face a bombardment of role-related challenges that lead to high levels of physiological and psychological stress which can cause outright or exacerbate symptoms of low-level burnout already simmering. The recent COVID-19 pandemic compounded the stress placed on already-stressed healthcare providers, leading to a surge in the number of nurses experiencing burnout to the point of leaving the profession entirely. Registered nurses need more education to recognize the signs and symptoms of stress, burnout, and moral distress in themselves and colleagues to implement appropriate, evidence-based methods of stress relief in their own practice. This program explores the stress, burnout, and moral distress that goes along with being a registered nurse. Topics include burnout and how it affects nurses and their role in healthcare; aspects of burnout and stress, as well as intervention tools to impact symptoms; and moral distress and how it can impact nurses in healthcare environments. There is also a discussion about how implicit bias may impact healthcare.
