By the end of this presentation, the participant should be able to:
- Identify the nutritional needs of postpartum women.
- Understand the needs of lactating women.
- Define how mother’s nutritional health can affect offspring.
Course overview
It is important that healthcare professionals working with women of childbearing age have a comprehensive understanding of the nutritional needs of women postpartum, as appropriate nutrition is important for overall mental and physical healing. Appropriate nutrition for postpartum women is also crucial for breastfeeding infants. The new mother's daily dietary intake should be balanced and crafted to restore nutrients that are diminished in the mother's body during pregnancy and birth. Diet and supplementation must also support the process of lactation, mental health, and hormone regulation. This program discusses how a mother's nutrition health can affect their infant, including the nutritional needs of postpartum and lactating women.
