Course overview

Nurses and medical professionals sometimes lack the knowledge of antiretroviral treatment (ART) for women, pregnant women, and children, leading to poorer outcomes when they have been infected with HIV. Nurses require education on ART for women, pregnant women, and children to better counsel patients undergoing this treatment. This course discusses medication considerations for women, pregnant women, and children living with HIV. Topics include the historical evolution of ART and its impact on women, pregnant individuals, and children; recommended ART regimens across the life span, including considerations for pregnancy, infancy, and adolescence; barriers to ART adherence and access in vulnerable populations; emerging ART innovations, including long-acting injectables and pediatric formulations; and evidence-based strategies to support equitable ART delivery in clinical and community settings. There is also a discussion about how implicit bias may impact healthcare.
