This 3 hour self paced continuing education course explores chronic illness from the patient point of view and the nurse role in promoting dignity, coping, and quality of life. The course emphasizes person centered caring and therapeutic communication rather than only disease management. Content integrates Caring Science frameworks by Watson and Swanson, combined with practical relationship based interventions nurses can use in any setting. Learners examine identity change, fatigue, pain, functional loss, grief, uncertainty, family caregiver strain, stigma, and isolation. The course teaches how to apply presence, empathy, and partnership to support daily living and self management. LEARNING OUTCOMES After completing this course, the participant will be able to: Describe how chronic illness reshapes identity, roles, and day to day functioning. Apply Caring Science concepts to build healing presence and trust. Use patient centered communication to identify what a good day means for the patient, and align care with the patient values and goals. Teach practical self management strategies such as pacing and energy conservation. Partner with family caregivers to reduce burden, support safety at home, and improve follow through. Recognize stigma and isolation and implement non judgmental and culturally sensitive interventions that improve engagement and adherence.
