Course overview

Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is an evidenced-based, 8-week training course designed to cultivate the skill of self-compassion. Developed by Dr. Kristin Neff, a pioneering researcher in the field of self-compassion, and Dr. Christopher Germer, a leader in integrating mindfulness and psychotherapy, this 8-session course combines experiential exercises, guided meditations, and interactive discussions to support participants in developing greater emotional resilience, mindfulness, and self-compassion. The program is appropriate for mental health professionals seeking to deepen their practice of self-compassion and mindfulness and enhance their ability to support clients in addressing emotional challenges with mindful self-compassion. Course Format and Structure: The MSC course consists of eight weekly sessions, each lasting 2.5 hours, plus a half-day (4-hour) silent retreat. Sessions are delivered in an interactive format that includes the following components: - Guided Mindfulness and Meditation Practices: Experiential exercises to cultivate mindfulness and self-compassion. - Didactic Content: Evidence-based information about self-compassion, its benefits, and its application in clinical practice. - Group Inquiry and Discussions: Opportunities for participants to reflect on their experiences and connect with other participants. - Home Practices: Weekly assignments designed to integrate self-compassion practices into daily life and professional settings. Program Relevance: Self-compassion and mindfulness are increasingly recognized as essential components of emotional well-being and resilience. Research shows that self-compassion practices can significantly reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress, while also enhancing emotional regulation and self-efficacy. For clinicians, incorporating self-compassion into therapeutic work not only improves client outcomes but also strengthens their own professional resilience. A key factor in effectively integrating mindfulness and self-compassion into the therapeutic space is that the clinician prioritize their own personal practice. Studies highlight that mindfulness training enhances the therapeutic alliance-the cornerstone of effective therapy-by cultivating present-moment awareness, improving self-awareness, enhancing emotional regulation, boosting empathy and compassion, and deepening active listening skills. This course equips clinicians with the knowledge, skills, and personal experiences needed to fully harness the benefits of mindful self-compassion in their practice and their professional lives.
