Course overview

This course provides critical knowledge for all veterinarians who work with controlled substances, addressing the legal, clinical, and ethical responsibilities that come with access to these drugs. Students will gain a clear understanding of federal controlled substance laws, best practices for safeguarding and dispensing controlled substances, and use of electronic prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs ). The course also covers recognition of substance use disorders and diversion in clients and colleagues, and presents strategies for managing chronic pain that reduce reliance on controlled substances.
