Challenging Psychological Disorders: Impulse-Control, Paraphilic, & Dissociative Disorders

Course overview

This live webinar focuses on challenging psychological disorder categories which receive little attention from continuing education programs. It is important for healthcare professionals to understand how patients with these psychological disorders may affect their clinical practice as well as the negative effects the disorders have on patients' lives. Dr. Longo will describe the following psychological disorder categories: Impulse-Control disorders (i.e., Intermittent explosive disorder, Pyromania, Kleptomania, Trichotillomania, Excoriation, & Pica), Paraphilic Disorders (i.e., Voyeuristic disorder, Exhibitionistic disorder, Frotteuristic disorder, Sexual Masochism & Sadism disorder, Pedophilic disorder, Fetishistic disorder, & Transvestic disorder), Dissociative Disorders (i.e., Dissociative Identity disorder, Dissociative Amnesia, Depersonalization, & Derealization disorder), and Somatic Symptoms Disorders (i.e., Body Dysmorphic disorder, Somatic symptom disorder, Conversion disorder, Factitious disorder, & Psychological Factors Affecting other Medical Conditions (Behavioral Medicine)). Each disorder's diagnostic criteria will be reviewed along with its epidemiology, etiology, and pathophysiology, as well as the psychological condition's unique biological and psychological theories. Additionally, the psychological disorders' specialized treatment modalities (i.e., medication, psychotherapy, and adjunctive medical procedures) will be examined, including the patient's responsiveness to these treatment techniques.
