Course overview

Alicia Warden is a Nationally Certified School Nurse and serves as the Lead RN and Health Services Supervisor for Kanawha County Schools, and serves as the West Virginia Director for the National Association of School Nurses. Alicia received her BSN at West Virginia University School of Nursing. Shelby Wamsley serves as the School Health Coordinator for the West Virginia Department of Education. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science in Health Informatics. This session is for the new school nurse. The objectives for this session are: 1) Legal & Ethical Framework: The participant will be able to describe the key federal and state laws, codes, and policies governing the school nursing practice act in West Virginia. The participant will identify at least three major legal policy documents that define their role and responsibilities as certified school nurses. 2) Professional Practice and Documentation: The participant will be able to demonstrate an understanding of best practices in school nursing, including confidentiality, documentation standards, and Individualized Health Planning. Participants will correctly apply FERPA and WVBE confidentiality requirements and outline the essential components of an Individualized Healthcare Plan (IHP) and Emergency Action Plan (EAP). 3) Delegation, Training, and Collaboration The objective is to explain the principles of nursing delegation, supervision, and training requirements for unlicensed school personnel as outlined in WVBE Policy 2422.7 and the Basic and Specialized Health Care Procedure Manual. The participants will identify the five rights of delegation, differentiate between basic and specialized training requirements, and describe their role in maintaining competency-based supervision in the school setting.
