ABSTRACT This briefing summarizes the links between interpersonal violence and illicit drug use, identifies risk factors for involvement in drug-related violence, outlines prevention measures that address drug-related violence, and explores the role of public health in prevention. It discusses links between drugs and violence based on available evidence, focusing primarily on illicit drugs. In general, the illicit use of prescription drugs is not discussed and the links between alcohol and violence have been covered elsewhere. This course on interpersonal violence and illicit drug use is designed for substance abuse counselors, social workers, psychologists, nurses, and professional counselors who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop their understanding of substance abuse and interpersonal violence. The course material includes a review of incidence of violence and illicit drug use in England. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require continuing education courses for license renewal. The course is based on review of literature which includes data on incidence.
