Culturally Informed Counseling Skills for Addiction and Mental Health Professionals Part 1

Course overview

This foundational module introduces the principles and practices of culturally informed counseling for professionals working in mental health and substance use treatment. Drawing from the SAMHSA TAP 21 framework, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how culture, identity, systemic inequities, and lived experiences shape the therapeutic process and influence recovery. The course emphasizes cultural humility, self-reflection, and trauma-informed engagement as essential tools for building ethical, inclusive, and effective treatment relationships. Through lectures, discussions, and applied learning, participants will examine how personal and systemic biases affect client engagement, assessment, and treatment outcomes.
