Course overview

This foundational module introduces the principles and practices of culturally informed counseling for professionals working in mental health and substance use treatment. Drawing from the SAMHSA TAP 21 framework, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how culture, identity, systemic inequities, and lived experiences shape the therapeutic process and influence recovery. The course emphasizes cultural humility, self-reflection, and trauma-informed engagement as essential tools for building ethical, inclusive, and effective treatment relationships. Through lectures, discussions, and applied learning, participants will examine how personal and systemic biases affect client engagement, assessment, and treatment outcomes. They will also learn strategies to foster trust, safety, and collaboration within diverse communities. By the end of this training, participants will be able to explain the importance of culturally informed counseling within addiction and mental health services. They will recognize how bias and systemic inequities influence client engagement and outcomes. Participants will learn to integrate TAP 21 foundational competencies into culturally responsive care and apply trauma-informed principles that honor the clients identities, spirituality, and lived experiences.
