Course overview

This foundational micro-credential introduces nurses to the essential concepts, terminology and ethical considerations of artificial intelligence (AI) in health care. Designed as the entry point for the Responsible AI in Nursing professional certificate, this course equips learners with the knowledge and perspective needed to engage in AI-related projects meaningfully. Participants will explore the definitions and distinctions between AI, machine learning, deep learning and natural language processing, with real-world examples tailored to nursing practice. The course also introduces the CHAI Health AI Lifecycle, offering a structured view of how AI solutions are developed, deployed and maintained across clinical settings. Learners will examine the five core principles of responsible AI - usefulness, fairness, safety, transparency and security - and reflect on the nurse's role in upholding them. Interactive activities, case-based scenarios and knowledge checks support active learning and lay the groundwork for deeper skill development in subsequent micro-credentials. By completing the whole series, you will be able to: - Explain the core concepts and terminology related to AI in health care; - Identify opportunities where AI can help solve clinical and operational challenges; - Contribute to the design, testing and deployment of AI systems that are safe, effective and equitable; - Apply ethical and responsible AI principles in your practice; and - Serve as a trusted voice for nursing in interdisciplinary AI projects.
