Course overview

This foundational micro-credential introduces nurses to the essential concepts, terminology and ethical considerations of artificial intelligence (AI) in health care. Designed as the entry point for the Responsible AI in Nursing professional certificate, this course equips learners with the knowledge and perspective needed to engage in AI-related projects meaningfully. Participants will explore the definitions and distinctions between AI, machine learning, deep learning and natural language processing, with real-world examples tailored to nursing practice. The course also introduces the CHAI Health AI Lifecycle, offering a structured view of how AI solutions are developed, deployed and maintained across clinical settings. Learners will examine the five core principles of responsible AI - usefulness, fairness, safety, transparency and security - and reflect on the nurse's role in upholding them. Interactive activities, case-based scenarios and knowledge checks support active learning and lay the groundwork for deeper skill development in subsequent micro-credentials.
