Course overview

Overview This module examines the connection between unresolved anger, mental health challenges, and substance use within the context of cultural experience. It is based on the Anger Management for Substance Use Disorder and Mental Health Client. A Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Manual developed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The session combines evidence-based cognitive behavioral strategies with trauma-informed care and cultural responsiveness. Participants explore how systemic oppression, intergenerational trauma, and social inequities influence emotional regulation and substance misuse. The training emphasizes practical approaches that help clients develop self-regulation, empathy, and positive behavioral change while honoring their cultural identities and lived experiences. Cultural Integration The theme Breaking the Cycle highlights the idea that anger often reflects deeper pain, experiences of oppression, or a sense of lost control. Participants learn to view anger not as defiance but as a form of communication that expresses a need for acknowledgment, justice, and healing. The module encourages clinicians to explore their own implicit biases, expand their capacity for empathy, and adapt interventions to align with each clients cultural worldview, spiritual beliefs, and family system. Ethics and Application This module includes two hours of ethics instruction integrated throughout the learning process. The ethical component focuses on maintaining professional boundaries during emotionally charged sessions, recognizing and managing countertransference, and preventing burnout. Participants also examine the ethical dimensions of race, power, and privilege within the therapeutic relationship. The training reinforces the use of trauma-informed ethics when facilitating anger management sessions to ensure safety, respect, and fairness for every participant. Learning Outcomes By the end of this module, participants will be able to deliver culturally sensitive anger management sessions that apply cognitive behavioral principles with compassion and skill. They will learn to incorporate empathy, validation, and empowerment into treatment planning while recognizing the systemic triggers that contribute to emotional dysregulation, particularly among marginalized groups. Participants will also strengthen the connection between assessment, individualized treatment plan goals, interventions, and documentation to maintain consistency and integrity throughout the therapeutic process.
