Too often, a fever of unknown origin in a global traveler prompts an extensive and lengthy infectious disease investigation. This webinar will guide learners through 2 case studies as presenters describe standard-of-care testing as well as new diagnostics for febrile illness in a global traveler and how they can be utilized in local laboratory diagnostic stewardship workflows. Summarize the key aspects of creating a differential diagnosis for fevers in returning travelers based on patient presentation, travel history and relevant epidemiology. Evaluate standard-of-care vs. esoteric tests as well as new diagnostic approaches to support conclusive diagnosis. Review laboratory workflows and testing algorithms in travelers presenting with fever appropriate for different types or sizes of institutions (such as community hospital labs or large academic medical centers).
