This half-day (6-hour) veterinary education program is designed to provide an in-depth look at current advancements in feline diabetes and canine cardiology management. The morning will begin with "SGLT2 Inhibitors: Safety & Efficacy Data" led by Dr. Ellen Behrend, introducing the latest research on velagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor, for feline diabetes management. Attendees will explore efficacy data on glycemic control and clinical signs, alongside potential adverse effects. Dr. Cynthia Ward will continue with "Getting Started & Monitoring SGLT2 Inhibitors," detailing practical steps for screening, initiating, and monitoring treatment in feline patients. The morning concludes with a hands-on "Troubleshooting & Complications Workshop" featuring both Drs. Behrend and Ward, focusing on identifying, preventing, and managing complications of SGLT2 therapy. In the afternoon, attention shifts to canine cardiology with "Management of Chronic Valvular Disease" by Dr. Sonya Gordon, covering the ACVIM guidelines through case examples, emphasizing staging, optimal treatment for advanced stages, and managing common symptoms like persistent cough. Dr. Wendy Ward will follow with "Mitral Valve Disease: Monitoring & Management Through the Stages," focusing on using radiographic and echocardiographic criteria to assess and manage degenerative mitral valve disease at various stages. A "Canine Cardiology Workshop" wraps up the program, where attendees will apply these guidelines to case studies, gaining hands-on experience with disease staging, therapeutic protocols, and symptom management.
