Nearly 40 percent of Americans will receive a cancer diagnosis at some point in their lifetime. From there, they may be overwhelmed with confusing and conflicting advice, including pseudoscientific miracle cures promoted online. Current misinformation environments often create doubt toward conventional medicine. Research shows that use of alternative therapies may increase risk of death when it results in refusal or delay of proven medical treatment. As healthcare practitioners, it is essential to support patients in making evidence-informed decisions. This course explores the role of integrative cancer therapy, combining conventional and supportive lifestyle strategies in a coordinated manner. Lifestyle is a critical component of integrative medicine, as an estimated 30 to 50 percent of cancers could be prevented through healthy dietary patterns, physical activity, and maintaining a healthy body composition. Diet and lifestyle can also be used as part of an integrative plan to positively influence treatment outcomes, reduce recurrence risk, and improve survival. While cancer patients face increased risk for mental health concerns, nutrition and lifestyle interventions have been shown to support well-being throughout cancer care. This course ensures providers have accurate, current, and actionable information on the role of diet and lifestyle in cancer prevention, treatment, and survivorship.
