This INR live webinar, Social Media and Mental Health, presents up to date information on how the rise of social media has shaped modern society and become integrated into daily psychosocial behavior. Currently, 98 percent of American adults own a smartphone, with average use estimated at 4.5 hours per day. About half of this time is spent on social media. Social networks now serve as major platforms for communication, entertainment, information sharing, and commerce. However, increased exposure also creates vulnerability to the harmful effects of social media use, including trolling, cyberbullying, and emotional stress. The benefits and risks of social media have been widely examined in recent scientific and social discussions. For health care professionals, social media can provide access to clinical resources, educational tools, mental health information, and telehealth services. This webinar outlines the role of health professionals in promoting digital literacy and helping patients use social media safely and effectively. The course presents strategies for guiding patients in balancing screen time with other activities, such as physical exercise, in person social interaction, and non screen hobbies. After completing this course, health care professionals will have a clearer understanding of how to recognize and respond to signs of internet overuse and social media dependency. The course also discusses how existing digital platforms can be used to support patient education, treatment, and recovery.
