Course overview

This course seeks to act as a refresher for salivary lesion pathology. Lesions or diseases that will be discussed include: mucocele, ranula, salivary duct cyst, sialolithiasis, sialadenitis, xerostomia, necrotizing sialometaplasia, salivary gland tumors, monomorphic adenoma, pleomorphic adenoma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma, acinic cell adenocarcinoma, adenoid cyst carcinoma, carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma, and polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma. The appearance/clinical presentation, causes, location of lesion, prevalence, progression, histopathological presentation, and tx of each lesion/disease will be discussed. Objectives: Name common salivary lesions or diseases Recognize common clinical presentations and symptoms Know contributing factors to such lesions or diseases Describe frequency by location of salivary tumors Be able to apply differential diagnoses Know when to refer for further evaluation or tx Know which solutions to use for submitting biopsy samples
