Course overview

Few things impact the human experience more than the ability to learn. And learning cannot occur without memory. The inability to learn precludes any chance of personal, emotional, intellectual, or spiritual growth, insight, creativity, or wisdom. There is a reason why in virtually every culture dementing illnesses such as Alzheimers are dreaded. Once our memory is lost, we lose most of what it means to be human. This webinar How We Remember, Why We Forget addresses the basics of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology involved in memory and learning, describes the methods of learning and forgetting, explores the accuracy of memory and how false memories are made, and presents the mystery of amazing individuals who seem to have perfect recall of past events. Topics addressing real world patient care include the negative effects of sleep deprivation on memory as well as commonly used over the counter and prescription drugs that impair memory, learning, and cognitive function. Caring for patients with memory deficits, amnestic disorders, or dementing illnesses is complex and time consuming. How We Remember, Why We Forget aims to help clinicians from multiple backgrounds gain greater insight into these challenging situations.
