Course overview

This course is designed to provide the professional Licensed Practical Nurse and Registered Nurse with comprehensive foundational knowledge in IV therapy practice, including identifying and managing central lines. At the end of this course, learners will be able to 1. Discuss the LPNs' role in IV therapy, infusions and managing central lines as identified in the Florida Nurse Practice Act and Brooks Rehabilitation's policies/procedures. 2.Demonstrate clinical knowledge, skills and attitudes in IV therapy as defined by the Florida Nurse Practice Act. 3. Correctly utilize medical terminology pertinent to IV therapy in clinical setting and demonstrate appropriate documentation. 4.Perform a venipuncture and safely administer therapies utilizing all relevant principles of infection control. 5.Monitor patients, correctly identify signs and symptoms of IV site/therapy complications and advocate for appropriate interventions 6.Correctly calculate IV fluids rates of administration and programming IV pumps 7.Demonstrate knowledge of managing peripheral parenteral nutrition 8.Describe the role of the LPN to care for a client receiving chemotherapy 9.Verbalize information about blood transfusions including indications, types of reactions, complications and the role of the LPN to care for clients receiving blood and blood products To earn the IV Certifications, LPNs must have... a.All modules, quizzes and associated reading within this course must be successfully completed. b. An in-person clinical competency evaluation for the learned skills in this course must be scheduled and successfully completed by the LPN with a designated RN Evaluator in direct supervision. For Brooks Rehabilitation, as of 2025 the only RN Evaluators currently acceptable are the Nursing Education and Professional Development Leader and campus-specific Clinical Nurse Educators. c. A score of at least 90% on the post-test must be achieved by the LPN to earn the IV Certification.
