Suicide Assessment, Treatment, and Collaborative Management for Health Professionals

Course overview

Suicide remains one of the top ten causes of death in the United States and a major public health concern, especially for individuals ages 10 to 34 and 35 to 54. Because most health professionals will encounter suicidal patients or be personally affected by suicide, strong skills in assessment, prevention, and response are essential across all healthcare fields. This seminar provides an evidence based practical overview of suicidology for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, mental health clinicians, social workers, and other health professionals. Participants will learn national trends, the Three Step Theory 3ST of suicide, the I CAN HELP model, and key components of comprehensive suicide risk assessment and management. The course includes experiential exercises, guided mindfulness practices, and case based learning to strengthen empathy, listening, and clinical confidence. Core topics include structured interviewing, mental status examination, documentation and legal considerations, HIPAA and privacy issues, safety planning, evidence based treatments, and collaborative risk management. Special populations such as veterans, incarcerated individuals, and patients with borderline personality traits are covered in depth. The seminar also addresses non suicidal self injury, postvention strategies, and ways to reduce suicide contagion. By the end of the webinar, professionals will be better prepared to assess, manage, and reduce suicide risk, improve referral and treatment engagement, support families, and integrate effective prevention practices into their clinical work. This course meets general CE requirements in many states and fulfills WA State suicide prevention training requirements and it is also applicable in CA, MO, and TX.
