Basics of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology for Behavioral Health
Tracking # 20-1342698
Course overview
Children and adolescents metabolize medications differently from adults. Their brains and bodies are constantly developing. Yet, most psychiatric medications have been studied for adults, not adolescents. Psychiatric medications are commonly used despite a lack of FDA approval. Many of the medications used to treat child and adolescent mental health conditions are prescribed off-label. Learning about medications commonly used for youth is important. It allows you to coordinate care and support individuals who feel more comfortable discussing medications and side effects with a mental health professional instead of their prescribing provider. You will be better prepared to talk with your clients and their guardians, helping them feel more informed and more comfortable discussing concerns with providers.
