Course overview

By the end of this course, the learner will be able to: 1. Describe the anatomical structures of the airway and the physiological mechanisms of ventilation and respiration. 2. Recognize causes, signs, symptoms, and urgency associated with a variety of airway obstruction in adult trauma patients. 3. Recognize causes, signs, symptoms, and urgency associated with common trauma injuries that affect breathing. 4. Identify components of a thorough and systematic airway and breathing assessment as well as rationalize why airway and breathing are part of the trauma primary assessment. 5. Describe basic and advanced airway management techniques and ventilation techniques, including the use or airway adjuncts, suctioning, and bag mask ventilation. 6. Discuss potential complications associated with airway management and ventilation in trauma patients, such as aspiration, barotrauma, and trauma to the airway.
