Pain can occur in many areas, including the back, head, feet, mouth, and other places. What can a health professional and a patient do to conquer, manage, and avoid pain? From a scientific standpoint, the six-hour seminar "Understanding Pain" will examine the causes of pain and provide recommendations for controlling it. The seminar reviews treatments for both chronic and acute pain, focusing on headaches, lower-back pain, and neck pain. It examines different drug treatments for pain and reviews the effectiveness of medications used in dentistry. It also discusses the overuse of pain medications. The seminar covers pain management, particularly opioid use. Each year more than 72,000 Americans die from opioid toxicity. At least 80 percent of heroin users were first exposed to opioids prescribed to address pain. The seminar also explores the use of cannabis in treating pain and behavioral therapies to control pain.
