Course overview

This 2-hour introductory course is designed for physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists seeking to expand their knowledge and clinical skills in addressing pelvic health concerns in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). Participants will begin by defining the basic neuroanatomy of PD as it relates to pelvic health, with a focus on understanding normal bladder, bowel, and sexual function -- and recognizing common signs of dysfunction. Through anatomical visualization, the pelvic floor muscles will be examined in the context of their role in continence, sexual function, and core stability. The course will summarize current data on the prevalence and describe the causes of the most common types of pelvic health dysfunction in people with PD, while addressing myths and misconceptions that often hinder timely intervention. Evidence-informed treatment options, including pelvic floor therapy and behavior-based strategies, will be explored to empower therapists in guiding patients and care partners toward better self-management. Special attention will be given to the development of effective communication strategies for discussing sensitive pelvic health topics with patients and for making appropriate referrals to specialty providers. This course will equip rehabilitation professionals with practical tools to enhance quality of life and dignity for individuals with PD experiencing pelvic health challenges.
