Course overview

This program discusses the science behind HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). Topics include the early history of the AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) epidemic in the United States; HIV structure and infection cycle; HIVs impact on the immune system; a brief overview of diagnostic testing for HIV; HIV treatment, from azidothymidine to antiretroviral therapy, as well as pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis; and the future of HIV care, including the potential for a vaccine or cure.
