Though advancements have been made in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention and management, there is still a significant portion of the population with the disease, including pregnant women. Nurses need to be well-educated in the history of HIV, current knowledge and statistics, and how to best advise and care for pregnant women with HIV, in order to prevent mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) during all stages of care. This program discusses the history of HIV, progress made, and pregnancy in the context of HIV. Topics include basic HIV concepts; why MTCT of HIV matters; the history of the HIV/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic; and basic concepts in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV. There is also a discussion about how implicit bias may impact healthcare.
