The course is based directly on the book Alcoholics Anonymous, "The Big Book". To correctly answer the questions, the reader must know what Alcoholics Anonymous says about issues such as work, relationships, anger, and being around alcohol. Professionals read from the Preface up to the Personal Stories in Alcoholics Anonymous. They take a 31 item test. If they answer 75% of the questions correctly they are awarded four hours. As measured by the posttest, participants will be able to: 1. Describe the Twelve Step recovery program, as outlined in Alcoholics Anonymous. 2. Correct commonly held but mistaken beliefs about what the book Alcoholics Anonymous says. (For example, many people believe AA is anti-psychiatry, despite numerous references in Alcoholics Anonymous to seeking help from other quarters and not having a monopoly on helping alcoholics.) 3. Help clients take an inventory. 4. Teach clients how the Big Book is applicable to their daily lives, e.g. being patient with family members who are less than supportive.
