Course overview

Alcohol withdrawal (AW) occurs due to complex responses in the brain that result from the cessation of alcohol consumption following a steady or prolonged period of excessive alcohol intake. Caring for a patient with AW consists of managing signs and symptoms and reducing risk for complications, including seizures, injury, and cardiovascular collapse. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of relevant research on the general principles of caring for a patient with AW including why this is important and information to provide to the patient’s family. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the posttest and evaluation form.
