ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION: ADMINISTERING INSULIN TO THE NEWBORN

Course overview

Insulin administration refers to the subcutaneous or parenteral administration of insulin as treatment for hyperglycemia, defined in newborns as serum glucose level > 150 mg/dl. Neonatal hyperglycemia is a common metabolic abnormality in critically ill infants and preterm, low birth weight (LBW; i.e., < 2500 grams/5.5 pounds) infants. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of the procedure for administering insulin to the newborn, and to aid in caring for newborns who require insulin therapy. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
