Course overview

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is commonly associated with cardiac dysfunction. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including acute myocardial infarction (AMI), remain the primary cause of early death in both type 1 and type 2 DM, with AMI accounting for > 55% of all deaths among patients with DM in North America. The most common pathologic finding in patients with DM and heart disease is diffuse atherosclerosis. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of AMI and DM, including its clinical presentation, symptoms, and treatment, and to aid in caring for the patient with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
