BLOOD TRANSFUSION: ADMINISTERING FRESH FROZEN PLASMA

Course overview

Transfusion of fresh frozen plasma (FFP) refers to I.V. administration of plasma and all of its components, including plasma proteins and clotting factors. FFP is primarily ordered in the treatment of a clotting deficiency of known or unknown origin (e.g., deficiencies of clotting factors II, V, VII, IX, X, and/or XI) and in the treatment of uncontrolled bleeding due to disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (DIC), blood cancers, liver disease, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), and warfarin overdose. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of the procedure for transfusion of FFP. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
