Course overview

Blood transfusion is the process whereby blood or blood products (e.g., RBCs, plasma, platelets, cryoprecipitate, clotting factors) are delivered via I.V. infusion to the patient’s circulatory system. Massive transfusion is performed in patients with severe, symptomatic bleeding demonstrated by loss of 25% or more of the patient’s blood volume, blood loss of greater than 150 ml/min, or risk of loss of life due to hemorrhage. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of the procedure for massive blood transfusion. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
