BLOOD TRANSFUSION: ADMINISTERING WHOLE BLOOD

Course overview

Whole blood transfusion is the intravenous administration of whole blood, which consists of RBCs, WBCs, plasma, plasma proteins, platelets, antibodies, electrolytes, and an anticoagulant preservative. The primary indication for transfusion of whole blood is in the treatment of traumatic hemorrhage and coagulopathy. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of the procedure for whole blood transfusion, and to aid in caring for the patient undergoing this procedure. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
