Course overview

Bone marrow biopsy (BMB) is an invasive procedure that involves the withdrawal of a sample of the solid specimen of bone marrow (i.e., the spongy core of some of the larger bones) for the purpose of detection of abnormalities, including cancer, infection, and hematologic disorders (i.e., abnormalities in blood cell production). BMB is commonly performed by a physician such as a hematologist or oncologist; it may also be performed by a nurse practitioner or physician assistant with special training. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of the nurse’s role in assisting with bone marrow biopsy. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
