Course overview

Adding medications to I.V. solutions is primarily the responsibility of a licensed pharmacist. However, in certain circumstances, the nurse may be required to add medications to I.V. solutions. I.V. solutions are prescribed by a licensed clinician for management of a wide range of disease processes and patient conditions, such as dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and when alternative routes of administration will not meet the patient’s needs for hydration, nutrition, or water and electrolyte imbalances. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of adding medications to I.V. solutions, indications for, benefits of, complications associated with, and steps involved in adding medications to I.V. solutions. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
