Course overview

A cane is an assistive device used during ambulation that is indicated for patients who need minor assistance with balance and support. An estimated 10.2% of older adults (i.e., 65 years of age or older) use a cane on a daily basis (Liu et al., 2011). This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of cane use including information on various types of canes, fitting canes, and how to provide education on cane use. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
