Course overview

Chylothorax refers to the abnormal accumulation of chyle in the pleural space and is the most common pleural effusion in neonates. Chyle is a milky-colored fluid that is comprised of lymphatic fluid (lymph) and chylomicrons (i.e., small fat globules) that have been extracted from chyme (i.e., partially digested food). This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of chylothorax in neonates, including its clinical presentation, signs and symptoms, and treatment, and to aid in caring for the patient with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
