Course overview

Postoperative chylothorax is a condition characterized by accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the pleural space occurring secondary to rupture of the thoracic duct as a complication of cardiothoracic surgery. The pleural effusion characteristic of chylothorax is a milky exudate, chyle, which is rich in T lymphocytes, lipids, proteins, and chylomicrons. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of postoperative chylothorax, including its clinical presentation, symptoms, and treatment, and to aid in caring for the patient with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
