Course overview
Bispectral index (BIS) monitoring is a method of measuring the depth of sedation through use of a specialized electroencephalographic (EEG) monitor. The results of BIS monitoring are considered together with results of the clinical assessment to determine the effectiveness of sedating agents (e.g., sedative, hypnotic, anesthetic, and analgesic drugs) and the impact of such therapy on the patient’s level of consciousness. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of BIS monitoring in order to better care for patients. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
