Course overview
Diabetes mellitus, type 1 (DM1; formerly known as insulin-dependent diabetes and juvenile-onset diabetes) is a life-threatening, multisystem, metabolic disease of abrupt onset characterized by severe insulin deficiency as a result of autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing pancreatic β-cells. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of DM1, including its clinical presentation, symptoms, and treatment, and to aid in caring for the patient with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
