Course overview

Fever is a regulated rise in core body temperature in response to stimuli, such as infection, inflammation, drug reactions, tumors, autoimmune diseases, and vascular occlusive diseases. In fever, the temperature set-point is elevated and effector mechanisms, such as shivering, heat production and metabolic rate increase, and blood flow to the skin decreases, reducing the amount of heat loss through the skin. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of the effect of fever management in adults, including its clinical presentation, symptoms, and treatment, and to aid in caring for the patient with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
