Course overview

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common chronic disease in which gastric contents reflux from the stomach into the esophagus, causing heartburn and other manifestations. The prevalence of GERD seems to be increasing worldwide, possibly due to such factors as increasing longevity, rising obesity rates, and more widespread use of medications affecting the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of GERD, including mechanism of disease, associated risks, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
