GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE IN OLDER CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

Course overview

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a motility disorder caused by reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus, is diagnosed when it causes heartburn at least two times per week and/or leads to complications (e.g., esophagitis). A thorough history and physical examination are sufficient to diagnose GERD in older children and adolescents; when more information is needed, a variety of diagnostic studies may be ordered. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of gastroesophageal reflux disease in older children and adolescents, including its clinical presentation, symptoms, and treatment, and to aid in caring for the patient with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
