GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE: EXTRAESOPHAGEAL MANIFESTATIONS

Course overview

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a motility disorder in which abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus causes mucosal abnormalities, heartburn, and other clinical manifestations. In addition to heartburn and regurgitation, GERD can present with extraesophageal signs and symptoms (S/S) caused by extraesophageal reflux (EER), including cough, chest pain, laryngitis, sinusitis, and wheezing. GERD-caused EER can produce complications, including damage to the lungs, vocal cords, ears, and teeth. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of extraesophageal manifestations of GERD, including its clinical presentation, symptoms, and treatment, and to aid in caring for the patient with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
