Course overview

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common chronic condition in which gastric contents reflux from the stomach into the esophagus, causing heartburn and other manifestations. Inflammation, erosion of the esophageal mucosa, and bleeding may occur. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of research on the PPI, esomeprazole, used in the treatment of GERD, including the drug’s pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profile, efficacy in relation to other PPIs, side effects, and drug interactions, and to aid in caring for the patient with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
