Course overview
Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a rare immune-mediated inflammatory demyelinating disorder that primarily affects the central nervous system (CNS) of children and young adults. ADEM is characterized by rapid-onset multifocal encephalopathy manifested with variable motor, sensory, visual or neuropsychiatric deficits; it is commonly preceded by an infection or vaccination. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of ADEM, including its clinical presentation, symptoms, and treatment, and to aid in caring for the patient with this diagnosis. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
