Course overview

Genetic counseling is a process by which information, guidance, and emotional support are provided to patients and families who have or may be at risk for genetic disorders. Genetic counselors use family history information, physical findings, and test (e.g., genetic, laboratory, imaging) results to assess a patient’s risk of developing a certain genetic disorder, risk for transmitting a genetic disorder to offspring, and likelihood that family members are also affected by the disorder. This continuing education module is designed to give the reader/learner an increased understanding of genetic counseling, including the step-by-step process, and to aid in caring for the patient undergoing genetic counseling. Readers may explore any or all of the topics. One contact hour of continuing education credit is available for those who successfully complete the post-test and evaluation form.
